I did not see it in 3D but on a DVD in normal 2D but I doubt my opinion of it would be improved by an extra dimension in bland. These shark films just keep coming. Once more sharks are not where they are supposed to be in the sea. These ones are in a lake but don’t worry because it’s a saltwater lake so that’s okay then. At least these sharks are in water and not swimming in the sand or running about on land
A group of college students go to a Louisiana lake for a weekend of messing around on the water. They’re going to the family holiday home of one of the group Sara (Sara Paxton) out on island in the middle of the lake. The other treats on the shark menu students in the group are nice hero boy medical student Nick (Dustin Milligan), his geeky friend Gordon (Joel David Moore), athlete Malik (Sinqua Walls), Malik’s girlfriend Maya (Alyssa Diaz), pretty boy Blake (Chris Zylka) and Blake’s girlfriend Beth (Katharine McPhee).
They get to lake and they have little bit of run-in with a hideous snaggle-toothed local called Red (Joshua Leonard). It turns out that Red is a friend of Sara’s old boyfriend Dennis (Chris Carmack). Dennis has a scar on his face after a boat accident that Sara caused the last time he saw her. There is a definite air of tension but on the surface Dennis seems polite and apologetic for Red’s behaviour.
The students get to the island and get down to enjoying themselves. Malik goes water-skiing with Nick driving the boat and Sara and Gordon along for the ride. They have attracted the attention of an underwater camera and some footage of a shark swimming that attacks Malik knocking him off the board. Nick circles round looking for him but they can’t find him. On the beach by the dock Maya and Beth are sunbathing and they get a shock when a half-dead Malik staggers out of the water with one arm ripped off. Once out of the water he collapses and there is panic, screaming, confusion and recriminations but no-one knows about the shark. Nick takes charge and tries to stop Malik from bleeding to death then he dives into the lake and finds the arm.
Nick has decided that they need to get Malik to hospital as fast as possible. Sara will drive the boat to nearest place with a hospital while Nick takes care of Malik. Maya also insists on coming along because the sharks need fed or something. They don’t get very far when the boat is attacked by a large CGI shark which takes out Maya and the back of the boat. It has damaged the steering and the throttle and that makes the boat turn sharply and crash into the dock in a ball of flames. Sara and Nick managed to dive into the water with Malik before the boat hit the dock. In the water Malik gets attacked by a hammerhead shark, attracted by the blood from his stump but they manage to kill it. Nick points out the obvious, that the boat was not attacked by a hammerhead. This film has CGI and footage of several different species of shark all in this lake. They are not there not there naturally; someone has put them in there.
This film is what it is; pretty young people in swimming costumes being eaten by sharks. It has no surprises. The acting was competent enough but I really didn’t care and I especially didn’t care about the Dennis-Sara-Nick triangle. The CGI was pretty obvious a lot of the time but it was okay. Watch this one at your own risk
